Having fire extinguishers at your commercial or industrial premises is essential, but that alone is not enough. Fire extinguishers need to be regularly checked and serviced to ensure that they are in perfect working order. The problem for many people is that they don’t know how frequently they need to be serviced and what work requires doing. This is when you need to call on the services of a company such as London Fire and Safe.

We have teams of experienced, expert mobile units available to check, maintain, refill and ensure that your equipment is fully compliant with government regulations. If you have a service contract with ourselves we will ensure that this work is carried out at the times it is required.

Fire Extinguisher Service
Most of us don’t like to entertain the idea of using a fire extinguisher in an emergency, but should that event ever arise, we need to be confident that the extinguisher works properly. The only way that you can ensure this is to have your extinguishers serviced and checked at regular intervals.

Here are a few guidelines that everyone should follow:
  • 1. All fire extinguishers need to be inspected every 6 months. This involves the checking of gauges and if they don’t have a gauge, weighing the equipment
  • 2. Some industries and extinguishers need additional checks to be conducted annually – our team can advise you on this
  • 3. Extinguishers need to be emptied, pressure tested and refilled every 5 years
  • 4. Some extinguishers require additional servicing after 3, 5 or 6 years – again our team can advise you on this
  • 5.The fire extinguisher testing intervals need to be recorded on label or metal tag attached to the unit
  • 6. No other work is required provided that visual inspections of the extinguisher show that it is in a serviceable condition. The obvious exceptions are if the gauge indicates that the unit is under pressure or the weight is too low
  • 7. All additional work must be approved by the client prior to being carried out.

In addition to the checks on the units, our fire extinguisher technician will also conduct the following checks:
  • 1. Check the extinguisher mouth is not blocked by any equipment, coats or other objects that could interfere with their use in an emergency
  • 2. Checks that the pressure is at the recommended level – on extinguishers with a gauge the indicator should be in the green zone
  • 3. The nozzle or other parts are not hindered in any way
  • 4. The pin and tamper seal are intact
  • 5. There are no dents, leaks, rust, chemical deposits or any other signs of wear and tear.
  • 6. Any corrosive chemicals, oil or other foreign bodies will be cleaned from the extinguisher
